Overview

Based at the Florey/Melbourne Brain Centre, the National Dementia Diagnostics Lab is an open access facility that conducts routine clinical screening for dementia-related biomarker proteins.

The facility is accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) and The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) #19256, as well as ILAC-MRA,  to test the Abeta1-42, Tau, and Phospho-tau quantification on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for Alzheimer’s Disease; and 14-3-3 protein detection in CSF; with approximately 90% sensitivity and specificity for Alzheimer’s disease or Creutzfeldt Jakob disease (CJD).

Benefits

Services & benefits:

  • Abeta1-42, Tau, and Phospho-tau quantification on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for Alzheimer’s Disease (NATA/RCPA accreditation #19256). The clinicians/researchers will gain a diagnosis for the specimens for Alzheimer’s disease with ~90% accuracy. In conjunction with clinical profile of the patients, clinician can make the diagnosis with greater confidence than the clinical presentation alone. This also helps clinical trials to select suitable population.
  • 14-3-3 protein detection in CSF (NATA/RCPA accreditation #19256); a positive result has approximately 90% sensitivity and specificity for sporadic Creutzfeldt Jakob disease (CJD) in the correct clinical setting. The 14-3-3 protein is an ante-mortem, non-specific marker of central nervous system neuronal injury or deathThe clinicians/researchers will gain a positive or negative result for the specimen.
  • Tests in development: Quantification of alpha-synuclein in biological fluid (human and animal species). The researcher will gain a quantifying levels of alpha-synuclein in the samples.
