Description

The Unix operating system is commonplace in scientific computing centres such as the VLSCI, but it can be an obstacle for new users. This workshop provides an introduction to Unix for people who have little or no prior experience. Guided by Dr Bernard Pope, participants will undertake hands–on activities to learn how to use Unix effectively and take advantage of its unique features to increase their productivity.

Topics include:

– Logging in from a remote computer

– Running commands and managing processes

– Navigating the file system

– Editing and manipulating text files

– Getting help

– Automating tasks with shell scripts

– Copying files between different computers

For further information on what will be covered, please refer to the course notes: http://www.vlsci.org.au/sites/default/files/IntroductiontoUnixatVLSCIBPope.pdf
