Overview

The Biological Optical Microscopy Platform makes available state-of-the art research equipment to the students and staff of the University of Melbourne, as well as the wider community. The Platform combines the Optical Microscopy instrumentation of the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute, the School of Biosciences, and the Departments of Anatomy and Neuroscience, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medicine (Royal Melbourne Hospital), and Microbiology and Immunology. It operates under the umbrella of the University’s Advanced Microscopy Facility.

The Platform specialises in meeting the needs of biomedical researchers and provides a complementary suite of capabilities, located in or linked to PC2 and pathogen handling capabilities.  The Platform provides access to optimal live cell imaging and conventional confocal microscopy, as well as pioneering microscopy instrumentation, including 2-photon microscopy and Super-Resolution Optical Microscopy. The instrumentation is optimised for the study of eukaryotic cellular networks, their highly complex internal architecture and their pathogens.

Dr. Paul McMillan

Dr Paul McMillan is the manager of the Biological Optical Microscopy Platform at the University of Melbourne. The platform manages the high end optical instruments across six departments and provides access, training and research support for both internal and external researchers. Dr McMillan gained his PhD in Molecular Microbiology from the University of Glasgow before relocating to Australia to use advanced imaging techniques to study host-parasite interactions. He has managed BOMP since 2013 and provides instrument training and assisted use on confocal microscopes, live cell instruments and super-resolution techniques.

ARC Australian Professorial Fellow. The Tilley lab is working as part of a global effort to understand and control malaria. We undertake research in the areas of cell biology and drug development related to the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum.

Dr. Ellie Hyun-Jung Cho is the support officer of the Biological Optical Microscopy Platform at the University of Melbourne. The platform brings together the high-end optical microscopes across 6 departments within the Faculty of Medicine, Health & Dentistry and the Faculty of Science (see www.microscopy.unimelb.edu.au). She completed her PhD in Anatomy and Neuroscience at The University of Melbourne in 2009 and continued postdoctoral research at the same university before joining the platform. Her research focused on the ion channels in sensory/pain pathway and digestive physiology. She is experienced in immunohistochemistry and fluorescence imaging of tissue sections as well as the electrophysiological recording of neuronal activity.
