Overview

The Australian Synchrotron is a scientific research facility located in south-east Melbourne, Victoria, at the heart of a technology and innovation hub. The Australian Synchrotron produces powerful beams of light that can be used to examine the atomic and molecular detail of a wide range of materials. The facility, which is the nation’s most significant piece of scientific infrastructure, actively supports the research needs of Australia’s major universities and research centres, and of businesses ranging from small-to-medium enterprises to multinational companies.
Fundamental and applied research using synchrotron technology benefits both the community and a diverse range of industries with particular benefits to the biotech and medtech sectors.

Benefits

Know how:Synchrotron light is advancing research and development in fields as diverse as:

  • Biosciences (macromolecular/protein crystallography and cell biology), medical research (microbiology, disease mechanisms, high resolution imaging and cancer radiation therapy)
  • Environmental sciences (toxicology, atmospheric research, clean combustion and cleaner industrial production technologies)
  • Agriculture (plant genomics, soil studies, animal and plant imaging)
  • Engineering (imaging of industrial processes in real time, high resolution imaging of cracks and defects in structures, the operation of catalysts in large chemical engineering processes)
  • Forensics (identification of suspects from extremely small and dilute samples).

Expertise:Availability of technical support:

  • Technical support is available
